Beagle Pup

Though Beagles are low-maintenance dogs, a purebred Beagle pup requires a great commitment of money, time, and attention. A price for a high quality Beagle puppy varies considerably depending on where it’s purchased. Puppy mills and backyard breeders may charge less compared to responsible breeders, but a puppy from unreliable sources will cause you much trouble and expense. A healthy and well-behaved puppy that will grow up into a dog with a high degree of conformance to the modern breed standard cannot be cheap. If you buy a Beagle for shows or for drag hunting, it makes sense to buy only a high quality dog, but if you need a family pet and a companion for sports, a pet quality puppy will be a good choice.

A Beagle pup of both pet and show quality needs housebreaking, socialization, and at least basic obedience training. Raising a puppy involves much expense, because a puppy needs quality food, vet help, toys, treats, and perhaps professional trainers. If you don’t have time or enough experience for housebreaking and training a Beagle puppy, consider buying an adult dog that was trained by the breeder. In this case you deprive yourself of the joy a puppy brings into the family, and get rid of the problems associated with a disobedient and poorly trained dog in the house.

A Beagle pup is a good pet for active families with elder children. If you prefer to relax while watching TV and don’t feel like taking a dog for a long walk, the Beagle is not for you. Even a large yard cannot provide enough exercise and mental stimulation for a Beagle, if it cannot visit new places and meet new people and dogs. When bored, a Beagle will find a way to escape and may not come back again.

Prior to purchasing a Beagle, consider that this breed is prone to separation anxiety. It means that a dog howls and barks when left alone, which will annoy your neighbors. When you buy an adult Beagle, ask the breeder how the dog acts when left alone. Well-trained dogs raised in a friendly atmosphere don’t normally feel fear and anxiety in such cases. If you buy a Beagle pup, you have to deal with the problem yourself.
