Beagle Mix

A Beagle mix retains much of the personality and talents of both parents. Mixed with most purebreds of the medium size, a purebred Beagle will produce a healthy offspring. The typical characteristics of both breeds can mix in any way and the offspring may look rather funny. Most Beagle mixes have long pendant ears, large eyes, short legs, and sleek short coat. All Beagle mixes possess a keen sense of smell and strong hunting instincts. A dog possessing even a small part of the Beagle blood enjoys investigating new places and chasing moving objects.

Though both parents of a Beagle mix were purebreds, a puppy of a mixed origin cannot be shown as a purebred. Obedience, agility, and other competitions for purebreds are closed for a mixed dog, but it can participate in sport events for mutts, mongrels, and mixed breeds. In the USA, there is a special term for non-purebred dogs – All-Americans.

Contrary to a common belief, purebred dogs are not superior to mixed dogs. All modern dog breeds were created by mixing several types of dogs and choosing the animals with desired characteristics. The difference between a purebred Beagle and a Beagle mix is evident only for a specialist. More than that, mixed dogs are more versatile than purebreds, because their parents were created for various tasks. Mixed dogs and mutts are generally healthier than purebreds, as they lack defective genes typical of the breed. The diverse gene pool of non-purebreds minimizes the occurrence of genetic disorders.

It often happens that people obtain purebred dogs as a matter of prestige or fashion. Dogs of some popular breeds are priced very high, because the demand for them allows making easy money. Those who don’t need a purebred dog or just cannot pay much for a family pet can adopt a mutt or purchase a mixed dog at a very low price. Dog shelters are full of homeless non-purebreds that can make better pets than some purebreds. Many mutts and non-purebreds are friendly, easy to train and serve the owner. If you are a Beagle fancier, but cannot pay much for a purebred dog, adopt a Beagle mix.
